Totland Pier has been a landmark on the Isle of Wight since the 1880’s where it’s been used with public access until 1980. The new owners, Totland Pier Ltd., has been progressing the re-development project to transform the pier back into a public venue as a restaurant at the end of the pier that would be accessible from both the shoreside and the water. Planning permission was granted for the new restaurant along with 15 boat moorings, close by, to transform Totland Pier to a new popular tourist location for both the island and marine tourist market.
Jenkins Marine Ltd. were contracted to supply and install 17 new piles to form the foundations for the new restaurant development. This project involved both the Doreen Dorward, our 50-tonne crane barge suited for piling projects and the Stour as a piles/materials transportation barge. Both multi-category vessels are perfectly suited for this type of operation as both have good manoeuvrability and powered spud legs to stabilise the vessels for water-based construction operations. The project planning went smoothly when we managed to get the ideal weather window to carry out the operations.
Once mobilised from Poole Harbour both vessels sailed over to Totland Pier where we set ourselves up for operations and started piling on Wednesday afternoon, 4th November 2020. As the location prevented staying overnight, we managed to work with the tide windows to get to and from Yarmouth Marina and optimise our operational time onsite and be efficient for our client’s requirements. With the use of a vibro-hammer we managed to install all 17 piles and complete the operations by Friday, 6th November 2020, and head back to Poole for demobilisation.
This has been a successful project and we are proud to be a part of a project such as this to ensure our public landmarks remain accessible to the public and preserve these landmarks for our local communities. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Totland Pier Ltd. and assist them where we can to make a success of their venture.
