We were delighted to be awarded the contract to dredge the Portsmouth Offshore Group’s Weevil Lake Marina site. This is a large dredging job involving the removal of some 10,000m3 of spoil funded and organised by POG themselves. The project required the removal of all the yachts, pontoons and other infastructure for our work. Only the piles remained, still providing a tricky navigation test for our crews.
Despite some very bad weather dredging commenced in November and, with a huge effort from our dredge team, was finished on time. Our highly manoeuvrable 300m³ capacity self-propelled, split hopper barges NAB and Needles worked continuoulsy to take the dredged material to the Nab spoil site, from which NAB takes its name, 13 km southeast of Bembridge, Isle of Wight, even sailing through strong winds to keep working.
Self propelled dredging barge Doreen Dorward was on site for the dredging operations. Its excellent manoeuvrability, shallow draft and large deck meant it was the perfect vessel for the project, being able to operate in amongst the remaining piles and other obsticles in the marina. Doreen Dorward’s 3 x 15m spud legs proved vital to hold the vessel in position during the inclement weather, allowing the dredging to continue without problems via it’s long reach excavator.
The dredging required some 40 trips to the spoil deposit site but due to the hard work of our crews and careful planning both before and during the project, dredging was completed within the allocated timeframe.
Our thanks to POG and its members for allowing us to use some of their excellent video footage.
